Over four years of construction, Willow Consulting helped transform a complex infrastructure project into a community-centered experience. Partnering with MnDOT’s Strategic Engagement Team and HDR, the team designed engagement strategies that went beyond traditional outreach—creating meaningful, memorable ways for South Minneapolis residents and businesses to stay connected to the project.

From hosting a 400-person dinner on the 38th Street Bridge to organizing bus and bike tours, student art initiatives, and school field trips, the work focused on meeting people where they are and inviting them into the story of the corridor. Willow Consulting built relationships through door-to-door outreach, stakeholder meetings, and partnerships with local organizations and elected officials, while also supporting messaging, events, and communications behind the scenes.

Outcomes

  • 8 large-scale events celebrating bridge reopenings
  • 30 “Sips & Scoops” events connecting residents with project leaders and topic experts
  • 20 project tours, field trips, and classroom engagements
  • 16 bus and bike tours offering behind-the-scenes project access
